The Weller family immigrated to what would become the United States from Germany in the 1740s. They headed west and by the mid-1790s they had put down roots in the Bluegrass state, building the early foundations of an industry that would go onto to become a defining part of Kentucky culture.
William Larue Weller, born 1825, began his career as a wholesale whiskey dealer and distiller. He spent much of his time spruiking the quality of his first-of-its-kind smooth sipping bourbon using a wheated mash bill.
In 1893 Weller hired a young salesman named Julian P. Van Winkle, or ‘Pappy’ as he was later known, who preached the gospel of wheated bourbon well after Weller’s passing in 1899.
W.L. Weller was launched by the Buffalo Trace Distillery to both honour a pioneering legend of the bourbon industry and meet growing demand for bourbon with both higher proof and longer barrel maturation.
Their regular release won a place in the hearts of bourbon lovers and we’re thrilled to share the first ever Australian exclusive single barrel of this fine whiskey.
The one word to describe this single barrel is ‘more’. All the flavours we love from Weller with the intensity dialled up.
Bronze to the eye, the nose features notes of cherry, mint and caramel corn fading to vanilla. Caramel and baking spices with hints of cocoa explode on the palate. Think a classic Australian caramel slice. The finish is full-bodied with a hint of leather joined by cinnamon, nutmeg and toffee.
